Abstract

876,280. Road vehicle spring suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. (Ford Motor Co.) Aug. 7, 1959, No. 27118/59. Class 108(2). Rear road wheel suspension linkage is arranged so that understeer results from both roll and side thrusts, and pitching movement of the vehicle on braking and acceleration is eliminated. A wheel carrier is connected to the vehicle frame F by an upper and lower suspension links 37, 43. The lower link 43 is connected to the frame F by a ball joint 46 and by an arm 44. The latter has a resilient connection at 54 with the link 43 and a pivotal connection at 52 with the frame F. The axis P of the connection 52 intersects the ball joint 46. The axis H of the pivotal connection between the link 43 and the wheel carrier is displaced by an angle A with respect to the axis P. The link 43 may alternatively be disposed above, and the link 37 below, the road wheel axle (Figs. 6, 7, and 8, not shown). The wishbone link 37 may be replaced by a trailing link which acts in conjunction with a non- splined type of drive shaft (Fig. 8, not shown). The link 37 may also be replaced by a telescopic strut (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown).
