Abstract

920,994. Independent rear wheel suspension. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oct. 16, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 24981/60. Class 108(2). A vehicle rear wheel suspension comprises a fixed length drive shaft 24 and a suspension arm 27 pivoted to the frame or body on an axis P and hinged to a wheel support member 16 on an axis H the axes P and H converging when viewed in side elevation (Fig. 2) and preferably also converging when viewed in plan (Fig. 1). The arrangement of the axes P and H provides roll understeer and anti-squat and anti-lift properties during acceleration and braking. The pivots 32, 34 of suspension arm 27 are preferably resilient but the rear one mounted on an extension of cross-member 18 or differential gear housing 21 may be a ball joint. By making the front pivot 32 more compliant than pivot 34 understeer may be produced by side forces on the wheel. The pivots 32, 34 may be both arranged in front of the drive shaft 24 and in an alternative construction (Fig. 8, not shown), the drive shaft is arranged below the suspension arm and the axes P and H converge towards the rear of the vehicle in side elevation. Specification 876,280 is referred to.
