Abstract

1523767 Rear suspension systems VOLKSWAGENWERK AG 28 Nov 1975 [29 Nov 1975] 48941/75 Heading B7D In a rear suspension comprising a pair of trailing arms 5 pivotally connected to a transverse carrier 9 which is mounted on the body of a motor vehicle by resilient elements 11, the swinging arms 5 are each connected to the carrier 9 by a single resilient bearing 8 located near a resilient element 11, and are interconnected near their forward ends in a manner providing angular rigidity in a horizontal plane by means of a torsionally-resilient transverse member 6 which is resistant to bending. The transverse member 6 is spaced rearwardly from the axis A of the bearings 8 so that when the vehicle rolls the trailing arms 5 effectively pivot about oblique axes passing through the bearings 8 and a point B at the centre of the member 6. A differential housing 2 is attached by a mounting 13 to the body and by a mounting 14 to the carrier 9, the input shaft of the differential passing over the transverse member 6.
