Abstract

866,121. Air - spring suspensions. GUY MOTORS Ltd. Oct. 19, 1959 [Oct. 23, 1958], No. 33902/58. Class 108(2). A rear bogie in a road vehicle has its front and back axles each independently mounted on a respective pair of beams 13, 14. Each beam is partially supported by at least one air-spring 18, 19 acting between the beam and the main part of the vehicle. A pressure equalising air connection 20 acts between the springs 18, 19, and air is led to or from the springs by way of a control valve 21 and levelling valves 22. The control valve is only operated in response to displacement of the mean level of the ends of'the axles relative to the chassis as on change of load or on acceleration or deceleration. The levelling valves may be omitted if other means are provided to prevent the bogie and chassis from becoming misaligned. A resilient link may be interposed between the link 21 and the operating member 23 to avoid operation of the control valve when there is appreciable movement of the centre of link 24 on rocking of the bogie or of the axles occurring. The construction may be modified (Figs. 2, 4, 6, not shown) by replacing the beams 13, 14 by beams which are each supported at each end by an air spring. These four air springs are connected by a common pressure equalising connection. Alternatively the leading air springs of the two wheels may be provided with a pressure equalising connection and the trailing air springs provided with a separate connection.
