Abstract

1487066 Motor vehicle suspensions BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 5 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 54047/73 Heading B7D A motor vehicle rear suspension, Fig. 1, includes torsion bar springs 19, 20 secured at their outer ends to respective trailing arms 17 connected to an axle beam 1 and at their inner ends to a common lever 28 which is connected to an anchorage on the vehicle body by an hydraulic strut 30 communicating with a gas spring 32. A combined lever damper and levelling valve 34 regulates the length of the strut 30 to maintain a constant suspension height. Each trailing arm 17 is connected to the axle beam 15 by a compliant mounting 16 and has at its forward end a sleeve 18 which is connected to the body by a rubber bush. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the inner ends of the torsion bars are arranged in overlapping relation and are secured to respective levers connected to the body by separate hydraulic struts. In an independent front suspension, Fig. 3, torsion bars 31, 32 are secured at their front ends to lower wishbone arms 17, 20 and at their rear ends to levers 39, 40 connected to a common anchorage 47 on the body by hydraulic struts 41, 42 communicating with gas springs 43, 44. Compression, tension or leaf springs may be used instead of gas springs.
