Abstract

983,684. Beam axle suspensions. DAIMLEKBENZ A.G. Sept. 26, 1963 [Sept. 29, 1962], No. 38017/63. Heading B7D. The sprung rear axle of a front wheel drive motor vehicle is located by a pair of longitudinal links 15 and a Panhard rod 21 and comprises a split tube 10 above each end of which is secured a tubular member 12 which forms or receives an axle pin 19 for a road wheel. The split 11 preferably faces downwards and extends from end to end of the tube. The members 12 are connected to axle 10 by sheet members 13, welded to and embracing the upper half of the axle tube 10, and 14 enclosing the axle tube but welded to the upper half only. Each link 15, which may comprise a member 14, is split at its forward end to increase its flexibility and is connected to a coil spring 23 below the perpendicular 25 to the spring axis 26 which passes through the link pivot 16 to provide progressive springing. The suspension arrangement provides variation in the wheel toe-in as the tube is twisted.
