Abstract

818,992. Road vehicle spring suspensions. SCAMMELL LORRIES Ltd. April 2, 1957 [April 19, 1956], No. 11957/56. Class 108(2) A motor vehicle spring suspension in which the vehicle frame 3 is supported by springs 7 interposed directly between an axle 1 and the ends of a transverse beam 6 connected by a longitudinal pivot 8 to the frame 3, is characterized in that the springs 7 and beam 6 are located on one side and clear of the axle 1, brackets 11 projecting from the axle 1 support the springs 7, a torque member 12 extending from the axle 1 is connected to the frame 3 by a ball joint 14 or equivalent pivotal connection, and a transverse link 15 prevents relative lateral movement of the frame and axle. One end of the link 15 is pivoted at 16 to a bracket 19 on the axle 1, while the other end of the link 15 is connected to a cross bar on the frame or, as shown, is connected by a pivot 17 to a lug 20 depending from the beam 6. The springs 7 are preferably of coiled helical form but volute springs or rubber or air springs may be used. The transverse beam 6 and springs 7 are preferably in front of, but may be behind the axle 1. Inclined hydraulic shock absorbers 18 are connected between the frame 3 and lugs 21 on the axle. Alternatively the shock absorbers may be located within the springs 7.
