Abstract

767,006. Spring suspensions; preventing lateral canting. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. July 15, 1953 [July 15, 1952], No. 19670/53. Class 108(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A vehicle suspension arrangement comprises main springs for the two opposite wheels of an axle and additional spring means which are arranged to be brought into action in addition to the main springs only after a predetermined spring deflection from the mean position when the vehicle is unloaded, the spring means being brought into action by stop means which are automatically adjustable during travel in dependance upon the loading and by the action of sprung movement of the vehicle. In the arrangement shown, in which a rear axlehousing 2 is suspended from a frame member 1 and in which swinging half axles 3 are each pivotally connected to a frame member 6 by a swinging link 4 and are sprung against the frame member 1 by coil springs 5, the links 4 are interconnected by a torsion-bar spring 8 which is mounted on a frame member 11, and which for oppositely directed movements of the links 4 acts as a stabilizer. A cranked portion 12 of the torsion bar is arranged to bear, during large simultaneous swinging movements of the links 4, against a stop 13 or against a stop 14 carried by a piston 15 movable in a cylinder 16 against a return spring 17. For relatively small swinging movements of the links 4, corresponding to light vehicle loading the portion 12 bears against the stop 14 for only relatively large upward movements of the links 4. Under full loading the portion 12 abuts the stops 13 and 14 irrespective of the swinging motion of the links, the piston in this case being displaced outwardly of the cylinder 16 by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure produced in a pump 18 secured to the vehicle frame, (see Group XXVIII). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 681,645.
