Abstract
990,940. Air-spring suspensions. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Oct. 19, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1962], No. 39610/62. Heading B7D. A suspension system for motor vehicles or trailers comprises air springs 33, each interposed between the vehicle chassis 15 and a trailing suspension arm 14 and provided with a tyre-type valve 38 whereby the air springs may be inflated or deflated when the vehicle is stationary to set the suspension at the desired level as indicated by a suitable distance gauge. Each trailing arm 14 is secured to the axle 11 of the trailer or to the rear axle of the motor vehicle by U-bolts 13 and is pivotally connected by a bolt 19 and nylon bearings to a bracket 16 bolted to the chassis 15 with provision for longitudinal adjustment. Each air spring extends between plates 32, 35 bolted to the bracket 16 and to the trailing arm 14 and is provided with an oil-resistant neoprene lining. Shock absorber 39 and rubber bumpers 41 are also provided.
