Abstract

932,832. Adjusting road vehicle body height; preventing lateral canting. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Jan. 2, 1962 [Jan. 4, 1961], No. 179/62. Class 108(2). In a vehicle suspension system having road wheels mounted on axles 10, 11, 12, 13 supported by hydraulic cylinders 14, 15, 16, 17 communicating with a common equalizing device 22 comprising interconnected pistons 25, 26 acted upon in opposite directions by forces transmitted from the two pairs of diagonally opposite wheels, the cylinders 16, 17 supporting the rear axles 12, 13 are connected through chokes 28, 29 with hydropneumatic springs 30, 31 and the cylinders 14, 15 supporting the front axles 10, 11 are connected through a pressurizing device 34 with a single hydro-pneumatic spring 35. Levelling valves 47, 48 linked to the rear axles 12, 13 and a levelling valve 49 linked to one front axle 10 supply fluid from a pressure reservoir 43 to the springs 30, 31, 35 or exhaust fluid therefrom to a tank 50 feeding a pump 51 supplying the reservoir 43. During downward deflection of the vehicle body parallel with the road, interconnected pistons 38, 39 within the pressurizing device 34 transmit the load on the cylinders 14, 15 to the spring 35 and the pistons 25, 26 of the equalizing device remain stationary since equal thrusts are exerted on opposite faces of the pistons. During rolling movement of the vehicle, such as when cornering, no load is transmitted by the cylinders 14, 15 to the spring 35 since increased pressure below one of distons 38, 39 is balanced by reduced pressure below the other piston, whilst the unequal pressures communicated to the equalizing device 22 from the cylinders 14, 15 result in displacement of the pistons 25, 26 whereby fluid is supplied to one of the cylinders 16, 17 and withdrawn from the other. Since the surfaces of the pistons 25, 26 subjected to the pressure in the cylinders 14, 15 are of smaller area than those communicating with the cylinders 16, 17 less pressure variation results in the cylinders 16, 17 than in the cylinders 14, 15. Rods 41, 42 in transparent cylinders provide visual indication of the positions of the pistons 25, 26 and 38, 39 which may be adjusted by hand operated valves 55, 56.
