Abstract

769,544. Stapling. SPEED PRODUCTS CO., Inc. Aug. 28, 1953 [April 20, 1953], No. 23885/53. Class 89 (3). In a pneumatically operated pistol-like stapling device, staple blanks from a roll R are bent to staple form by a forming blade F which co-operates with anvil portions AH of a bending block BB slidable in a pivoted base CC, and are then driven by a driving blade DB. The base CC is held closed by a spring- pressed sliding latch LT thereon engaging with notches N in a keeper K carried by a fixed housing S. The blades F, DB co-operates with lips L on the block BB which normally extend across a guideway FG for the blades and project through slots 32 in the housing S, so that the anvil portions AH are withdrawn against a spring 105 as the staple is formed and driven. The staple blanks are fed forwards by spring-pressed pawls P pivoted on a cylindrical portion C of the device or on a container SBC for the roll R which is held in position by a spring strip ST engaged with a bar 136 at the rear end of the base CC. Feeding is effected by portions 83 of the pawls cooperating with spring tongues 92. Retrograde movement of the staple blanks is prevented by a spring-controlled rockable member GB. The blades F, DB are carried by outer and inner portions FP and SDP respectively of a double piston slidable in the cylinder C and operated by air under pressure from a chamber 23 under the control of a triggeroperated valve V. The outer piston FP moves downwards against a spring 155, the inner piston SDP remaining stationary, until the outer piston clears a fixed rubber sealing cup 28, and thereafter the inner piston SDP moves downwards. The container SBC forms the subject-matter of Specification 769,545.
