Abstract
1379087 Stapling machines CARBIDE FORM GRINDING Inc 20 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 48385/72 Heading B4C A stapling machine comprises a driver 6 and a driven member 7 which engage each other for movement in a groove in a guide member 4, a coupling and uncoupling means, such as a roller 52, for connecting the driver to the driven member, a stop 14 for stopping movement of the driven member, means, such as a cam face 35, for moving the roller to an uncoupling position to allow continued movement of the driver, and means, such as a spring 55, for returning the roller to its coupling position between faces 35 and 511 during the return stroke of the driver. As shown, the driver 6 is operated by a pneumatically-actuated piston and cylinder 12 controlled by a push-button solenoid valve 25 and the driver is resliently connected to the driven member 7 by a pin 29 on the driver engaging a spring 30 in a slot 28 formed in the driven member. When the driver 6 is depressed it carries the driven member 7 which is provided with a pair of punches 36, 37 for co-operating with a stationary die 20 for cutting off a length of wire W. When the wire is contacted by the punches, the spring 30 is slightly compressed so that the cam face 35 engages the roller 52 to positively depress the driven member and punches to cut the wire and then deform the length of cut wire over a projection 48 of a retractable anvil 44. After the wire has been bent to a U-shape, the anvil 44 is retracted against the action of a leaf spring (45) Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) by means of a cam face (50) on the punch (36). A stop screw 14 on the driven member 7 is adjusted to contact face 58 when the punches 36, 37 reach the material M to be stapled. In this position the roller 52 is positioned adjacent a pocket 54 and the cam face 35 pushes the roller into its uncoupling position within the pocket against the action of the spring 55 to allow depression of the driver 6 only to drive a clincher 32 towards an anvil 21 and staple the material. After the clinching operation, the push-button solenoid valve 25 is again operated by the operator to reverse the action of the cylinder 12 ready for the next stapling operation. During the return movement the wire W is fed stepwise from a reel 17 by a feed pawl 64 which grips the wire by means of rollers (69) co-operating with inclined surfaces (70, 71) Fig. 11 (not shown) when moved anticlockwise about a pin 61 by a cam face 59 on the driven member 7, the feed pawl operating in conjunction with a stationary pawl 65 of identical construction. In a modification, Figs. 12 to 15 (not shown) the coupling and uncoupling means is constituted by a spring-urged pin (78) which is pushed by a cam surface (82) into a hole 75 to allow the driver to continue its downward movement to the clinching position after the driven member has been stopped by the stop (14). When in the rest position a tension spring (86) holds a pin (85) of the driver (6a) in engagement with the upper end of a slot (84) formed in the driven member (7a). The driver 6 of the machine may be operated by a foot-operated lever or by a solenoid instead of by a pneumatic cylinder and the machine may be used for stapling the two stringers of a slide fastener or for stapling cardboard boxes.
