769,074. Compressing packages. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. May 16, 1955, No. 14142/55. Class 94(1). A device for compressing a package prior to baling comprises a table 5 having mounted on it for adjustment radially and vertically a doubleacting pneumatic cylinder 25 containing a piston, the rod of which is attached to the compressing plate 38. The device may be combined with a banding machine. An air compressor 12 and reservoir 17 are mounted beneath the table, and air supply to the cylinder is controlled by a solenoid operated four-way valve 24. The plate 38 is lowered by operating a foot switch 45, the valve then admitting pressure air above the piston. After compressing and tying, a part (not shown) of the banding mechanism operates a micro-switch to admit air below the piston. Specification 417,803 [Group I], is referred to.
