Abstract

A water-in-oil dyestuff emulsion for use in the dyeing or printing of textiles comprises, as the inner phase, an aqueous dyestuff- or dyestuff-intermediate-preparation and, as the continuous phase, a waterimmiscible, volatile, organic liquid, the emulsion containing a non-polymerizable emulsifying agent which is more soluble in the oil phase than in the aqueous phase and the amounts of emulsifying agent and organic liquid in the emulsion being 0.3-15 per cent by weight and 5-25 per cent by weight respectively, the emulsion being completely free from any filmforming or polymerizable or hardening agents. Specified organic liquids are various hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones and ethers. Specified dyestuffs are vat, sulphur, sulphurcarbazole, direct, acid, azoic and acetate dyes. Specified emulsifying agents are condensation products of ethylene oxide with long-chain fatty acids or with alkyl phenols, aliphatic alcohols, fatty acid amides, alkyl amines, mercaptans and partial esters of polyhydric alcohols; ethylene oxide-propylene oxide condensation products; propylene oxide condensation products with long-chain alkyl amines; primary and secondary longchain aliphatic amines; fatty acid amides; long-chain aliphatic amine salts; aliphatic esters; alkanolamines; long-chain alkyl ammonium chlorides; dialkylsulphosuccinates and petroleum sulphonates. Electrolytes may be added to the aqueous phase to diminish the solubility of the emulsifier in this phase. The dyestuff emulsions may be applied, e.g. as by padding or printing, to all kinds of natural or synthetic textile fibres such as those of cotton, ramie, jute, linen, sisal, wool, silk, mohair, camel's hair, cashmere, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, casein, polyamides, polyesters and polyvinyl compounds. Numerous emulsions containing vat dyes are described. Specifications 647,098, 733,099 and 759,293 are referred to.
