Abstract

An additive to a dry-cleaning solvent for the purpose of brightening or bleaching fabrics comprises an emulsion of aqueous hydrogen peroxide in a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon, boiling within the range 100 DEG -300 DEG C., containing a non-ionic surface-active agent. The hydrocarbon should be free from unsaturated aliphatic groups and readily polymerizable compounds, and may be derived from a petroleum cracking and aromatization process or from coal tar. A non-aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. white spirit, may be present in an amount up to that of the aromatic hydrocarbon. The surface-active agent may be a condensate of an alkylene oxide with a fatty alcohol or ester, e.g. condensates of oleyl, cetyl, or oleyl-cetyl alcohol with 5-7 molecules of ethylene oxide; polyethylene glycol 400 monostearate is also suitable Preferably the surface-active agent is first dissolved in the hydrocarbon and then the aqueous hydrogen peroxide added with agitation.ALSO:An emulsion of aqueous hydrogen peroxide in a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon boiling within the range 100 DEG -300 DEG C. contains a non-ionic surface active agent.
