Abstract

Fibrous materials especially of cellulose, silk or wool, are vat dyed with an oil-in-water emulsion comprising an outer phase constituted of vat dye particles of mean size 20-100 m , preferably 60-80 m , dispersed in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble caseinate, soya bean proteinate or mixture thereof and an inner phase consisting essentially of a volatizable hydrocarbon oil. The caseinate may be the ammonium, borax or alkali metal compound obtained by reacting a casein slurry with the appropriate alkali at 60 DEG C. in aqueous medium. The caseinate solution may contain a preservative (sodium o-phenylphenate). The soya proteinate is prepared in the same way. The aqueous phase of the emulsion may also contain glycerin, diethylene glycol triethylene glycol or mixtures of such glycols as lubricants as well as surfactants and anti-foam agents for example 2-ethylhexyl alcohol which contains the properties of both. Advantageously the aqueous phase also contains sodium alginate. The hydrocarbon oil may be aliphatic, aromatic or a mixture having a boiling range of 100-300 DEG C. and a KB value of 45-55. The emulsion may be prepared by dispersing the vat dye in a solution containing the caseinate or poteinate and other additives using an Eppenbach homogeniser at a temperature of 80 DEG F. and then adding the hydrocarbon oil to form the emulsion which has a viscosity of 700-3100 cp. The emulsion may be applied by padding followed by dipping, padding in a reducing bath, steaming, reoxidising with bichromate, rinsing, soaping, rinsing again and drying. Examples are given.
