Abstract
The treatment of textiles with aqueous liquids is facilitated by the addition to the liquid used of water-soluble acid phosphoric esters of aliphatic alcohols containing at least 8 carbon atoms, or the water-soluble salts thereof. The esters may be derived from saturated or unsaturated simple or substituted aliphatic open chain or cyclo-aliphatic alcohols. Water soluble combinations of acid phosphoric esters with organic bases such as amines containing one or more hydroxy-alkyl radicles are particularly advantageous. In scouring wool, where the water is hard, the well-known true sulphonic acids of aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic, or aromatic compounds may be substituted for the soaps usually employed. 2-6 per cent of the acid phosphoric ester is usually sufficient. In treating wool or other animal fibres the phosphoric ester present must be less than 10 per cent of the material treated, otherwise considerable weighting of the material occurs. Processes are described for scouring wool with (1) the sodium salt of the acid phosphoric ester of cetyl alcohol, (ii) a mixture of mono- and di-cetyl phosphoric esters to which is added aqueous acetic acid, (iii) a neutral salt of triethanol amine with an acid phosphoric ester of a chlorinated alcohol mixture obtained by chlorinating paraffin wax until it contains about 35 per cent of chlorine and then treating the chlorination product with alkali or alkaline earth at a pressure above atmospheric until the content of chlorine has been reduced to about 10 per cent; (iv) aqueous solution of the sodium salt of an acid phosphoric ester prepared from unsaturated alcohols obtained by the destructive oxidations of paraffin wax with the aid of air, (v) a solution of the neutral salt of triethanol amine with an acid phosphoric ester of cetyl alcohol, hexyl alcohol, and caprionic sodium salt. In processes for treating viscose artificial silk, a solution of the triethanolamine salt of the acid cetyl phosphoric ester produces a soft material with a matte surface, the addition of the triethanolamine salt of the acid cetyl phosphoric ester together with Glauber's salt to a dye bath containing Oxamine Brown B, and Oxamine Black B R, gives uniform and even dyeing, skeins of viscose artificial silk that have been mordanted with tannin and tartar emetic and dyed with Diamond Green G in the presence of acetic acid are made smooth and supple by treatment with a solution of the sodium salt of an acid phosphoric ester prepared from unsaturated alcohols obtained by the destructive oxidation of paraffin wax in air. An emulsion containing olive oil, or arachis oil, or a mineral lubricating oil, or free oleic acid or a mixture of these, to which is added a triethanol amine salt of the acid phosphoric ester of cetyl alcohol, with or without the addition of glue or other mineral or vegetable protective colloid or soap, or a sulphonated product of vegetable or animal fat or oil such as Turkey-red oil is used as an oiling agent in making shoddy or in spinning fibrous material or in brightening dyed fabrics. Specifications 240,514, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], and 281,232, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.
