Abstract

Water-in-oil emulsions suitable as textile printing pastes comprise aqueous solutions or dispersions of a dyestuff emulsified in a solution of an ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose in a water-immiscible solvent, which ethyl hydroxyethyl celluloses have a viscosity of 10-250 c.p. at 25 DEG C as a 5% solution in 80:20 toluene: ethanol. Specified water-immiscible solvents are toluene, benzene, solvent naphtha and preferably petroleum fractions, especially white spirit. Suitable dyes are direct, vat, sulphur, "onium", reactive, acid, chrome and disperse dyes as required for printing cellulosic, wool, silk or synthetic fibres. The emulsions may further contain reducing agents for use with vat or sulphur dyes or for coloured or white discharge effects, thickeners, glycerol and dispersing agents. The printed fabrics may be fixed by a heat treatment. Examples are given.
