Abstract
Textile materials are dyed or printed by applying a thickened aqueous preparation containing a dye followed by ageing or steaming, the preparation being free from water-miscible film-forming material and containing less than 1.5 per cent of water-soluble film-forming material and thickened by emulsifying a volatile water-immiscible organic liquid as a disperse phase in the aqueous phase. Suitable dyestuffs are vat dyes and substantive cotton dyes for natural or regenerated cellulosic fabrics, acid dyestuffs for silk or wool, and dispersed insoluble dyes for cellulose acetate, nylon and vinyl polymers. The dyestuff may be replaced by a white or coloured discharge. Preferably the total solids in the preparation are below 15 per cent and the total volatile liquids above 80 per cent, whilst the water-immiscible phase may constitute up to 70 or 80 per cent of the preparation. Emulsifying agents are used which do not lower the surface tension of the water by more than one-half. Water-miscible liquids, if present, do not exceed 10 per cent. Methyl cellulose is specified as a suitable water-miscible film-forming material which may be present in amounts up to 1.5 per cent. Examples are given of a number of printing compositions suitable for application to cellulose acetate fabrics, the volatile water-immiscible liquid used being kerosene. According to the Provisional Specification, emulsion of the water-in-oil type also may be used.
