Abstract

Vat dyeings are produced on textile materials by applying a "water-in-oil" emulsion containing an aqueous dispersion of the vat dyestuff, up to 25 per cent by weight of a waterimmiscible organic liquid of boiling range 60-220 DEG C. and up to 30 per cent by weight of a non-polymerizable emulsifier which is better soluble in the oil phase but which in the presence of alkali, and if necessary reducing agents, loses its oil-solubility in favour of substantial or complete water-solubility, and then reducing and reoxidizing the dyestuff. Specified emulsifiers are salts of organic bases such as cycloalkylamines, pyridines, piperidines and long chain aliphatic amines with alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids, and also high molecular weight amides such as the condensation products of lauric, palmitic, stearic or coconut oil fatty acid with phenylene diamine or with 4,41-diaminodiphenyl-methane. Ethylene oxide-higher fatty acid condensation products may also be incorporated in the emulsion. Inorganic salts such as sodium chloride may be added to the aqueous phase. Examples are given.
