In a rectlinear combing machine a brush, acting in conjunction with the nippers to automatically clean the top comb, is carried by a support adapted to rock about the upper jaw of the nippers and to be subjected to the action of a control synchronized with the closing and opening movement of the nippers in such manner as alternately to bring the brush into contact with the circular comb during the operative step of the latter and with the top comb at the conclusion of the combing step performed thereby. During the operative step of the comb A, the comb B is in its raised position and a brush 7 carried on a frame 6 adjustably fixed to bosses 5 of rocking supports 3 bear against the top jaw D of the nippers and just touch the needles of the comb A to press fibre therebetween in the normal manner : as opening of the nippers commences, a feed gill E will have almost performed its normal return stroke, and at the end of the opening step of the nippers, during which the top comb has lowered, the feed gill E moves forward to cause gradient portions 22 of adjustable blocks 20 to engage heads 17 on plungers 15 and rock the supports 3 so that the brush 7 is advanced, and, during the next lifting step of the comb B, the simultaneous closing movement of the nippers causes the brush to wipe the comb B needles : when the nippers are almost closed, the heads 17 having been released from the gradient portions 22, springs 19 return the brush to the position shown.
