Abstract

766,651. Grinding. STEPHAN, W. [trading as STEPHAN UND SOEHN, A.]. Dec. 9. 1953 [Dec. 31, 1952; June 5. 1953], No. 34201/53. Class 60. A workpiece is ground by a thin disc, preferably of sheet steel, coated on one or both sides with an abrasive, the disc being formed with axially directed openings therethrough and rotated at a speed which is high enough having regard to the persistence of vision of the human eye to provide a persistent view through the openings, so that with the workpiece applied to an abrasive side of the disc at the side remote from the operator, the grinding process is observed by the operative as grinding proceeds. A steel disc a has radial slots d or incisions e; the latter may be formed by separate sectors, fingers or the like f mounted in a separate rotary carrier, e.g. on or between retaining or clamping discs. Sectors or fingers g may also be aranged mutually parallel in groups. Circular inspection apertures i may be arranged on a spiral line. The edges n of the apertures are bevelled. The abrasive material may be applied directly to the disc or may be on a carrier, e.g. a cloth backing stuck to the disc. When both sides of the disc are abrasive coated, the grain size on one side may differ from that on the other. The surface of the disc which is to be directed towards the operator is preferably dark in colour, e.g. black.
