Abstract

833,309. Abrasive wheels. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 21, 1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 12557/58. Class 60. An abrasive wheel for cutting off lengths of hard material, such as glass or ceramic rods or tubes, has its side cutting surfaces 4 provided with at the most 15 preferably irregularly distributed recesses 6 per sq. cm. in addition to the normal recesses for retaining bonded diamond grains 5. The wheel consists of a central metal disc 1 which is adapted to be secured by known clamping means to a shaft and has on both of its sides adjacent its periphery cutting surfaces 4 comprising the diamond grains 5 and the additional recesses 6. The recesses are preferably conical in shape with an apical angle of 60 degrees and at the most 15 recesses having a depth of 0À2 m.m. may be provided per sq.cm. of the cutting surface of a wheel 150 m.m. in character and 0À8 m.m. thick. The cutting surface may be divided into equal segments 7, 8, alternate segments 8 being provided with the additional recesses 6 and being adjacent segments without the recesses on the other surface of the wheel. A water jet is continuously directed on the wheel and work during cutting.
