Abstract

Rollers, spindles, and the like, treating.- Rollers, pins, &c. are ground by the flat face of a grinding-wheel 4 across which they are fed freely in a guide-channel carried by a work-holder 1, which is adjustable towards and from the grinding-disc and angularly in a plane parallel thereto. The guide-channel comprises two front plates 9, 10 having inclined inner faces and adjustably secured to the work-holder, and a cyclindrical back pressure member 8. The member 8 is mounted in a bracket 7 adjustable towards and from the front plates, to accommodate work of different diameters, by screws 15 and fixing- screws 17 mounted in the work-holder. The member 8 may, as shown in Fig. 3, be mounted, so as to be rotated by frictional contact with the work, on an axle 18 secured to lugs 19 on the bracket 7. In another construction, the member 8 is keyed to the axle and may be rotated to bring a fresh face into contact with the work, a nut normally holding the spindle immovable. In a further modification, the member 8 is mounted on a live axle carried by the bracket 7 and is rotated by friction between the member 8 and the axle. The axle is driven, as shown in Fig. 8, through universal joints 30, 32 and a shaft 31, by friction-gearing comprising a disc 35 driven by a roller 36 the pressure of which on the disc may be varied. The shaft 37 of the roller 36 is driven through universal joints 42, 44 and a shaft 43. The member 8 may be fixed to the live axle.
