Abstract

A grinding disc (2) for use in an edge grinder has apertures such as slots (4) in it to allow a view of a workpiece through the disc when the disc is in use.

Description

1 GRINDING DISC 2332162 The present invention relates to grinding discs.
Illustrative embodiments of the invention relate to grinding discs for use in edge grinders. The present invention also relates to a hand-held power tool which uses a grinding disc. An example of such a hand-held tool is an edge grinder and the invention will be discussed by way of example with reference to an edge grinder.
Hand-held, powered, edge grinders are well known. Such a grinder uses a circular grinding disc, which comprises a substrate to which an abrasive material is bonded. When such a hand-held grinder is used, the disc may be in the line of sight between the user and the work-piece, hiding the work piece. That can make use of the grinder difficult.
According to the present invention, there is provided a grinding disc for an edge grinder, the disc having slots and/or apertures therein allowing a workpiece to be visible through the disc when the disc rotates in use.
The provision of the slots and/or apertures, renders the disc semitransparent when rotated at its normal operational rate. Thus the work piece can be seen.
The slots and/or apertures can take a variety of forms. For example at least one of the slots may extend to the outer periphery of the disc. Preferably all the slots extend to the outer periphery. The slots are preferably radial but could be inclined to the radial direction.
Instead of slots other shaped apertures could be used.
It will be appreciated that it is essential that the grinding disc is not unduly weakened by the provision of too many slots or slots which are too big. Also, appropriate safety precautions must be taken when using discs in accordance with this invention.
For a better understanding of the present invention, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure I is a diagram of an illustrative grinding disc according to the invention.
2 The disc of Figure 1, comprises a substrate 2 to which abrasive material is bonded. The substrate and abrasive material are well known in the art. In this preferred embodiment, the substrate comprises glass cloth bonded with a cured phenolic resin. The abrasive material may be carborundum or any other well known 5 abrasive material.
Four radial slots 4 are forined in the disc, each slot extending to the periphery of the disc. The radially inner ends 6 of the slots are smoothly curved.
Experiments have shown that the disc allows a view of a workpiece to which it is applied in use. The disc functioned normally.
Various modifications may be made. For example the substrate of the disc could be a metal disc with an abrasive facing. The metal may be ferrous or nonferrous.
The slots may be inclined to the radial direction.
The number of slots may be other than 4 provided that there are sufficient to allow the workpiece to be seen through the disc in use thereof. For example there may be 5 or more slots.
Not all, or even any, of the slots need extend to the periphery of the disc.
The slots may be replaced by other apertures, for example circular holes arranged in patterns which allow a view of the workpiece through the disc when the disc is rotated in use.
The invention may be applied to discs of various sizes, e.g. 4 inch (102 mm), 41/2 inch (115 min) or 9 inch (229 mm) 3

Claims (6)

2. A disc according to claim 1, having slots therein.
3.
A disc according to claim 2, wherein the slots are radial.
4. A disc according to claim 2 or 3, wherein at least one of the slots is openended at the outer periphery of the disc.
5. A grinding disc substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the 15 accompanying drawing.
6. A hand-held powered edge grinder comprising a disc according to any preceding claim.
