Abstract
A grinding or polishing element comprises a mass of cut lengths of fabric or other suitable material, abrasive grains, and a bonding medium, the mass being bonded together to form a solid abrasive element, in which the abrasive grain is substantially evenly dispersed in the bonding medium between the cut lengths, as described in Group V. In examples, corset cuttings coated with abrasive are mixed with tricresyl phosphate and then mixed either with solid phenol-formaldehyde resin, stearic acid, chalk and a wetting-agent or with a liquid phenol-formaldehyde resin; and the mass moulded at 150-170 DEG C. for 5-15 minutes at a pressure of 1,120 lbs. per square inch.ALSO:A grinding or polishing element comprises a mass of cut lengths of fabric or other suitable material, abrasive grains, and a bonding medium, the mass being bonded together to form a solid abrasive element, in which the abrasive grains are substantially evenly dispersed in the bonding medium between the cut lengths. The cut lengths may be of woven or unwoven fibres such as cotton, jute, asbestos, nylon, glass, wood, wool or of phenol-formaldehyde resin bonded glass fibre or of metal. The bonding material may be rubber latex, phenol-formaldehyde resin, unreaformaldehyde resin, alkyd resin or vinyl resins, and fillers such as chalk may also be added. The abrasive material may be sand, emery, garnet, aluminous oxide or silicon carbide. Wetting agents, solvents, and lubricants such as furfural, low viscosity liquid phenol- or cresol-formaldehyde resin, industrial methylated spirits, acetone, water, alcohols, hydrocarbons, camphor, stearates phthalates, may be added to modify the viscosity. The elements in the form of regular or irregular shapes may be regularly or randomly placed, and after pressing they may be fluted or grooved. In examples, corset cuttings coated with abrasive are mixed with tricresyl phosphate and then mixed either with solid phenol-formaldehyde resin, stearic acid, chalk and a wetting agent or with a liquid phenol-formaldehyde resin; and the mass moulded at 150-170 DEG C. for 5-15 minutes at a pressure of 1,120 lbs. per square inch.
