Abstract

766,303. Carburetters. SOLEX. Feb. 15, 1955 [Feb. 20, 1954], No. 4512/55. Class 7 (3). In a motor vehicle a hot air supply conduit comprises two branching passages leading respectively to the carburetter and to the interior of the vehicle, a tube open to atmosphere joining the branching passage connected to the carburetter and means is provided for controlling the respective flow rates of fresh air and of hot air to the carburetter at the junction of the tube and of the branching passage so that the temperature of the air flowing into the carburetter can be controlled independently of the temperature of the air flowing into the interior of the vehicle. Air from an intake 7 is heated by a coil 9 through which flows a stream of hot fluid such as the exhaust gases or as shown water from the cooling system a fan 6 placing the air under pressure. The fan and heater belong to the vehicle heating system pipe 10 leading to the inside of the vehicle. The fan is driven by an electric motor fed from the battery of the vehicle. In hot weather the circulation of hot fluid through the heater is stopped or the operation of the fan 6 is stopped. A valve 12 controlling the flow of air may be manually operated but is preferably actuated by a thermosensitive device 14 responsive to the surrounding temperature. All fresh air may be cut off as soon as the temperature drops below - 5‹C. Suction acts against resilient means which may be the strip 14 itself to open the passage 4 if the fan is not working. In a modification the outlet of pipe 5 is controlled by a sliding valve actuated by a thermosensitive device subjected to the temperature of the mixture fed to the engine. The air filter is indicated at 3.
