Abstract
696,712. Ventilating aircraft and other enclosures. SHAW, G. E. May 23. 1951 [June 22, 1950], No. 12055/51. Class 137 In a ventilating system, especially for an aircraft, a compressor feeds air to a choke valve which can be positioned to throttle the compressor outlet duct and cause the air to become heated by the additional compression, the valve also serving to apportion the flow of air between two ducts, one of which contains a cooler whilst the other forms a bypass which joins the outlet duct from the cooler to form a single duct leading to the space to be ventilated. In the apparatus shown, a compressor 10 is connected by a duct 12 to a combined selector and choke valve 11, which has two outlet ducts 13 and 14, the former containing a refrigerator unit 17, the ducts combining at 15 into a duct 16 leading to the aircraft cabin &c. The valve 11, Fig. 2, comprises a cylinder 19 in which pivots a shutter 22 which can be moved from a position wherein it nearly covers the inlet port 24 to one wherein it covers the outlet 26 into the duct 14. In operation, with the shutter 22 in the " neutral" position shown, air from the compressor passes to the carbin almost wholly via duct 14 since the unit 17 in duct 13 presents a comparatively large resistance to the flow of air therethrough. If the air temperature rises above the level set on a thermostat 27 mounted in the duct 16, a reversible motor 28 moves the shutter to close the duct 14 thus diverting more air through the cooler 17. If the temperature falls below the required level, the shutter is moved to close off the inlet duct 12 and so produce more heating of the air by additional compression.
