Abstract
766,064. Thermionic valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 29, 1954 [March 30, 1953; March 30, 1953; May 24, 1954], Nos. 8686/53, 8688/53 and 15237/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(c)] A thermionic valve cathode is heated by ion bombardment in normal operation or during degassing or processing; gas is released by heating an occluder substance and subsequently reabsorbed by allowing the occluder to cool. The ions are directed on to the cathode by an applied electric field. An occluder of hydrogen consists of an indirectly heated nickel gauze cylinder coated with a suspension of zirconium or zirconium hydride, titanium or titanium hydride, or thorium. The hydrogen pressure is of the order of 10-<4> to 10-<2> mm. of mercury. A rare gas may be used. In a magnetron initial ion bombardment is followed by electron back bombardment. A steady field maintains continuous electron back bombardment in pulsed working. A circuit for stabilizing the magnets on current is described (see Group XL(c)). Details are given of the preparation and activation of a pellet of zirconium or zirconium hydride.
