Abstract
673,424. Detecting leaks in evacuated enclosures. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 24, 1950 [March 29, 1949], No. 7424/50. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (a)] Relates to apparatus for detecting leaks in an evacuated enclosure, for example a radio transmitting tube 1, 2, and comprising in known manner an ionization monometer opening into a palladium tube 4 which when heated is permeable only by hydrogen. The invention resides in providing the ionization manometer as a glow discharge tube 6 associated with magnet poles 8 producing a beam of magnetic flux which intersects spaced cathodes but does not intersect the anode. As shown, the flux beam between poles 8 is intercepted by spaced coaxial cathode plates 9 but not by the central cylindrical anode 10 which lies outside and surrounds the beam. In use the palladium tube 4 is heated by passing a current through it and the hydrogen spray 11 explores the radio tube 1, 2 and if there should be a leak the hydrogen will pass via connecting tube 3 and palladium tube 4 into the glow discharge tube 6. The walls of the discharge tube 6 are flattened to match the shape of the poles 8. Specification 619,133 is referred to.
