Abstract

766,005. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILCO CORPORATION. Oct. 8, 1953 [Oct. 9, 1952], No. 27687/53. Class 39(1). In an electron gun of the kind where an apertured control electrode 136, Fig. 6, is closely spaced from the cathode emissive layer 130 and the aperture defines an effective emission arc a (radius r) from which alone electrons can enter the beam, the arc a is divided in a central portion (radius e) and a peripheral portion (radial depth d) of different curvatures, the peripheral portion being "less concave" than the central portion ; by this means the peripheral electrons, which with a flat cathode will form a cross-over before the central electrons, are given a radially outwardly component of velocity relative to the central elevations which causes their cross-over to recede into closer proximity to the central cross-over. In modifications, either the central portion or the peripheral portion may be flat, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). Electrode 134 has its aperture bevelled at the top to improve the uniformity of the field adjacent the cathode. Twin control electrodes 74, 76, Fig. 2, each facing a separate so-curved emission area, are mounted in an electron gun which is generally of the same construction as is disclosed in Specification 762,550, except that an apertured beam-converging electrode 68 is interposed between the control electrodes and the end of the can 20. Numerical details of dimensions and spacing are given. The gun may be used in a colour-indexing system as in Specification 745,353.
