Abstract
A fluorescent coating composition, particularly for fluorescent lamps, comprises a suspension of finely-divided fluorescent material in a liquid consisting of 9 parts by volume of a lacquer comprising a cellulosic binder such as nitrocellulose and a solvent therefor such as an alkyl acetate which is not substantially miscible with water and 1 part by volume of a mixture of 8 per cent by volume of water together with 92 per cent by volume of a coupling agent such as mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol (Registered Trade Mark "Cellosolve") which is miscible with the water and the solvent. Fluorescent material to binder ratios are preferably in the range of 1 : 1 to 1 : 2. A thinner comprising 50 per cent butyl acetate and 50 per cent naphtha, by volume, may be added. The solvent for the binder may be 60 per cent butyl acetate and 40 per cent naphtha, by volume, or may be amyl acetate, nitropropane, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone or mixtures of toluene and alcohol. Examples of cellulosic binders are nitro-cellulose, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, cellulose butyrate, and mixed esters such as cellulose acetate butyrate. Many examples of coupling agents which are mono- and di-hydroxy alcohols, ethers, esters, ketones, ether-alcohols and ketone alcohols are referred to.
