Abstract

The core-sand compositions of the parent Specification comprising sand and, as a binder therefor, a powder comprising a cellulose derivative and a resinous component, are used as mould-sand compositions, optionally after admixture with a minor proportion of soot. The methods of preparing the binder and of mixing it with the sand are the same as indicated in the parent Specification. From 1 to 8 parts by volume of the binder are used to 100 parts by volume of sand, together with sufficient water to adjust the moisture content of the mix to about 3 to 7 per cent. Usually 5 to 15 parts of soot per 100 parts by volume of sand are also added. In the example, 70 parts by weight of a powdered water-soluble ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose are mixed with 30 parts by weight of a powdered melamine resin, and 100 litres of sand are mixed with 1.5 kgs. of binder and 10 litres of coal soot. Thereupon sufficient water is incorporated in the mix to raise its moisture content to 4 to 6 per cent.
