Abstract
1301523 Foundry sand production FONDERIES MAGOTTEAUX 20 May 1970 [21 May 1969] 24468/70 Heading C3N A mixture of a granular mouldable refractory sand with an expandable clay such as bentonite and water suitable for use as a foundry sand is agglomerated in a process in which an initial proportion of water is added to the sand and the expandable clay which is equal to at least twice the final proportion of water that is present when the mixture is used, the mixture then being mixed and water eliminated to provide the mixture with not more than said final proportion of water. The process results in an increase in cohesion of the granular refractory sand. The initial proportion of water may correspond to the point of water saturation of the expandable clay. The water is preferably reduced from the initial proportion to the final proportion by stirring, optionally accompanied by heating to accelerate evaporation of water. The initial proportion of water may be 2-20 times the final proportion and the excess water may be eliminated by stirring the mixture until the final product contains a proportion of water between 2 and 6% by weight, preferably approximately 3% by weight. The elimination of the water may be continued to a proportion lower than the said final proportion
