Abstract
A binder, for mixing with sand to form a moulding mixture for use in making casting moulds and/or cores, comprises by weight 79 to 91 per cent of hardenable phenol-formaldehyde resin and/or hardenable cresol-formaldehyde resin and 9 to 21 per cent of plumbago or terraflake or a mixture thereof, the ingredients being in a dry powdered state. The resin constituent of the binder may be as low as 5 per cent of the total mixture of sand and binder, and generally should not exceed 10 per cent. Hexamine may be used as the hardening agent. Examples are given.
