Abstract

Solutions of cellulose esters, such as lacquers, are prepared with the aid of an alkyl ether of ethylene glycol, particularly the mono- and di-methyl, ethyl and propyl ethers, mono-allyl ether and di-isobutyl ether. The ethers dissolve cellulose nitrate readily; when mixed with other substances they form powerful solvents for cellulose acetate, thus a lacquer is obtained by simple solution of cellulose acetate in a mixture of the mono-ethyl ether and ethylene dichloride, and to the solution may be added a high-boiling-point solvent such as glycol mono- or di-acetate, acetylene tetrachloride or diacetone alcohol. Auxiliary solvents or diluents may be added to the solutions; thus, to a solution of cellulose nitrate in the mono- or di-ethyl ether, a mixture of these, benzene, acetone, methyl or ethyl alcohol, or naphtha may be added.
