Abstract

324,911. King, P. H. Nov. 2, 1928. Plastic compositions containing cellulose esters. -A waterproof cellulosic composition suitable for making films and particularly photographic films or plates comprises a cellulose derivative such as cellulose monodi- or tri-nitrate, acetate, formate, or oxalate, with 1 to 5 per cent of bone oil, whale oil, neatsfoot oil, mutton fat, beeswax or fish oil or a mixture of two or more of such oils or fats. A plasticizer may be added, and a solvent such as acetone is added until the mixture attains the desired consistency for casting or moulding. The various ingredients may be mixed in any desired order. In an example, cellulose acetate is mixed with 10 to 20 per cent of camphor, triphenyl phosphate, or tricresyl phosphate or mixtures thereof, and 3 to 3¢ per cent of one or more of the above specified oils and fats. 'The whole is then dissolved in 5 to 6 parts by volume of moisture-free acetone. The mixing operations are carried out preferably at 60‹ to 65‹ F. The oils or fats must be decolorized and must not contain matter which is thrown out at 4‹ F. below freezing point. Specifications 925/04, [Class 98, Photography], and 301,017, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to.
