Abstract
764,994. Vehicle wheels. RUHRSTAHL AKT.-GES. Dec. 21, 1954 [Dec. 21, 1953], No. 36918/54. Class 144 (1). In a railway wheel assembly wherein separate wheels 4, each comprising a one-piece disc and hub, are pressed on to an axle shaft 6, the wheel hubs 1 are supported over their entire length on the axle shaft and are formed with extensions 2 to extend fully into the axle bearings 3, to form the journals. The wheel disc 4 is bowed outwardly in the opposite direction to the hub extension so that the disc 4 emerges from the hub 1 substantially parallel to the axle. Fig. 1 shows an assembly wherein the bearing 3 lies outside the wheel, the hub extension 2 in this case having a flange 8 to abut the axle shaft and being machined on its bearing surface subsequent to being pressed on the axle. Fig. 3 shows an interior bearing assembly wherein the hub extension abuts a flange 9 on the axle shaft 6. In this latter case, to avoid the necessity of subsequent machining of the extension 2, the wheel is made a sliding fit on the axle and that part of the axle within the hub part 1 only is expanded by driving in a plug 11. The plug 11 has a flanged head 12 to abut the axle end, and a central bore 13 to permit hydraulic removal.
