Abstract

763,896. Tubular heat exchangers. STRIKFELDT, W. S. Jan. 7, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 555/55. Classes 64(1) and 64(3) In a tubular heat exchanger in which a heating medium such as waste gas flows through the tubes, which are preferably finned, and heats air or gas flowing over the tubes, each tube comprises a plurality of short tube lengths 4 anchored at their ends in elastic end plates 3 and secured about midway of their lengths in other plates 2, the tube lengths being slidably interconnected at their ends by means of sleeves 5. In the cross-flow air heater shown, each sleeve 5 is secured to the end of one tube length and slides over the end of an adjacent tube length. The ends of the tube lengths are welded into the end plates 3 which are dished or otherwise shaped to provide the required resilience for accommodating expansion of the tubes. The air after making one transverse pass (as shown) or a plurality of passes in transverse co-current adjacent the hot gas inlet is conducted through a by-pass 7 to the gas outlet ends of the tubes and thereafter flows in transverse counter-current to the gas in a plurality of passes to the heated air outlet 9. The elastic end plate adjacent the gas inlet may be protected by heat resisting material 10.
