Class 34(1) Apparatus for drying paper, textile or other webs or sheets in which the material 5 is conveyed on rollers 2, 3, 4, 9 through a long narrow passage 1 while heated air or other gas is forced into the passage through a nozzle 6 by a fan 25 at the material exit to flow in countercurrent has the walls of the passage 1 diverging from the point of air entry 11 to the exit 10 so that the cross-sectional area of the passage increases and prevents development of back pressure at the point of air entry and maintains the static pressure substantially equal to that of the ambient atmosphere. A portion of the air may be recirculated via return pipe 12, heater 7 and fan 25, fresh air being provided via intake 13 to replace exhausted moist air. The gas may also flow in the same direction as the material movement.
