Abstract

972,324. Drying materials in long lengths. BELOIT CORPORATION. April 18, 1962 [July 20, 1961], No. 15111/62. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D2] Apparatus for drying a paper or like fibrous web, comprises a first endless porous belt 29 arranged to travel over a first pair of rolls 22, 23 providing a first run of the belt travelling in one direction and a second run travelling in substantially the reverse direction, and a second such travelling belt 30 and pair of rolls 24, 25, the first run of the second belt closely following and extending in substantially the same direction as the second run of the first belt, whereby the web travels successively in a serpentine manner over the two belts, and means for passing a flow of heated air over the exposed surface of the web on the belts to dry the web. The web is held on belts 29, 30 &c. by suction from rolls 22-25 &c. and by the hot air which is at, or slightly below, atmospheric pressure, from hood 32, 34 &c. Shields 36, 37 &c. prevent leakage of air into the suction area and allow the web to be smoothly transferred to the next belt arrangement. The belts may be horizontal rather than vertical and may be more than three in number.
