Abstract

762,371. Hydraulic couplings. SINCLAIR, H. Aug. 18, 1954 [Sept. 3, 1953], No. 24429/53. Class 69 (2). A coupling has a double-ended scoop tube with oppositely directed scoop orifices and which is movable to extend into either the reservoir or into the working circuit. In one position, the tube transfers liquid from the reservoir to the working circuit and in the other position it transfers liquid from the working circuit to the reservoir. In one embodiment having two tubes, the coupling comprises an impeller 1, a runner 2, a reservoir 9, and scoop tubes 15, 16, the tubes being guided in a housing 7 and engaging, when extended into the reservoir, a groove 12 and when extended into the working circuit engaging with a chamber 11 communicating by holes 5b with the working circuit. The tubes are moved by a hand lever 20, a toothed sector 22, teeth 24 on one end of a sleeve 18 and teeth 17 on the other end of the sleeve, the latter teeth engaging racks on the tubes. The liquid may be circulated via a cooler by providing holes in the scoop tube which communicate with ducts in the housing 7. In a modification, one tube may circulate some of the liquid via a cooler continuously and the other tube may circulate the remainder of the liquid directly. One or more centrifugally operated valves may be provided in a part 5 forming one wall of the chamber 11, the valves opening to empty the working circuit rapidly when the coupling is stationary or nearly so. Specification 509,761 is referred to.
