Abstract

538,217. Hydraulic couplings. SINCLAIR, H.; and BASEBE, A. C. April 10, 1940, No. 6504. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Kinetic type hydraulic couplings and brakes, in which scooping means withdraw working fluid from a rotary reservoir chamber for passage to the working circuit, are constructed with scoops 32, 33, carried by an adjustable slide 31 which can be moved, by a light force, in a guide 30 in a fixed manifold sleeve 20 which surrounds the runner shaft 15 of the coupling. The scoop shanks and the guide 30 have ports capable of being registered with one another and with a passage in the stationary member leading to an external cooling circuit. Movement of the slide 31 is effected by a rotatable shaft carrying a crank-arm which engages the slide. The mouths of the scoops face away from the middle plane of the rotating chamber 24, one being close to the periphery thereof and the other, more remote therefrom. The invention is described in connection with a scoop-controlled coupling as set forth in Specification 493,703 and the larger scoop 33 acts when it is desired to refill the working chamber quickly. The smaller scoop 32 coacts with a circumferential bulge 54 of the reservoir and returns liquid to the working circuit when the working chamber is to be filled to maximum capacity.
