Abstract
The invention comprises aqueous solutions of compounds of the formula: <FORM:0762344/IV(b)/1> where X is O or S. These are made by reacting 1 mol. of urea or thiourea with 1.5 mols. of formaldehyde in neutral or slightly alkaline aqueous solution and then adding 1 mol. of glyoxal. On standing at normal temperature the above compound is formed via an intermediate which is probably a hydroxymethylated glyoxal monomer. Examples are given of the preparation of the compounds.ALSO:The crease- and abrasion-resistance of textile material is increased by impregnating them with aqueous solutions of compounds of the formula <FORM:0762344/IV(b)/1> where X is oxygen or sulphur. Thus, spun rayon may be treated with the compound (X=O) in boric acid solution at pH 5.3 or with the compound (X=S) in hydrochloric acid solution at pH 3.5.
