Abstract
In a process for the production of coiled steel strip the rolled stock is quenched, directly after issuing from the last roll pass and before being coiled, to an external temperature lying between Ar3 and the lowest external temperature at which coiling of the stock is possible, and is then coiled while being further cooled. The quenching may be performed in a quenching tube, through which water flows continuously, in which case the degree of quenching may be adjusted by altering the inclination of the tube when it contains a fixed amount of water, by using a tube having a fixed inclination which is provided with a number of discharge outlets for the water, the distance in the water through which the stock passes being determined by the position of the operative discharge outlet, or by varying the rolling speed: the latter method may be used alone or in combination with one of the former methods. Alternatively, the quenching may be effected by running the stock over metal surfaces which are kept cool, e.g. by internal or external cooling with water: this may be used in combination with the quenching tube. After quenching, the stock is passed to a reel subjected to cooling, e.g. by being submerged in, or sprayed with, water, or dry cooled by a blast of cold air, and may then be immediately subjected to an equalizing heat treatment at a temperature of 250 DEG -550 DEG C. for at least 20 minutes.
