Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of strip steel having a tensile strength greater than 140 kg/mm2, hot-rolled stock is quenched directly after issuing from the last roll pass to an external temperature lying between the Ar3 point of the cooling curve and the lowest external temperature at which coiling of the stock is possible, the stock is coiled while being further cooled, is then immediately subjected to an equalizing heat treatment at a temperature between 250 DEG C. and 550 DEG C and after cooling is cold-rolled. The quenching may be effected by any of the methods disclosed in Specification 762,127 or by a blast of cold air, alone or in conjunction with a fine water spray. By way of example is described the production of strip where steel plate bars having the composition of C 0.94 per cent, Si 0.21 per cent, Mn 0.59 per cent, P 0.45 per cent and S 0.017 per cent were rolled out to hot strip having a temperature of 980 DEG C., the strip quenched to 600 DEG C., coiled, the temperature being still further reduced, subjected to an equalizing heat treatment at 480 DEG C., cooled in air, pickled and then cold-rolled. An annealing treatment prior to cold-rolling is optional. The strip may be used in the manufacture of wood-saw blades, e.g., for band-saws, and metal-saw blades.
