A platform h, Fig. 4, adjacent a pit shaft b can be moved vertically between a position in which, as shown in Fig. 4, it supports a traverser a for moving wagons c to or from the pit shaft and a raised position in which it serves as a bridge to support the wheeled pusher head e of a ram d by which the wagons c are pushed off the traverser so that the ram d may be retracted when the traverser has been moved away. The platform may thus form part of a system in which, as in Specification 740,824 which is referred to, the ram d need not be retracted before the traverser is moved. Three platforms h are provided in the pithead system shown in Fig. 3, one opposite each of the cages c in the shaft b and one opposite a tippler f between which and the cages c the wagons are moved by a pair of traversers a and by three rams d. Each traverser a runs in a channel g as shown in Fig. 4. The platforms h are raised and lowered by rams i, Fig. 4, and are formed with rails or grooves for guiding the wheels on the pusher heads e. A single platform h may replace the pair of platforms serving the two cages c and means may be provided for co-ordinating the movements of the platforms and the traversers. Similarapparatus may be provided at the bottom of the shaft. The pusher heads e may be supported by skids instead of by wheels.
