Abstract
840,230. Gravity railway systems; marshalling vehicles. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. July 10, 1958 [Sept. 23, 1957], No. 29789/57. Classes 78 (4) and 104 (2). A system for moving wheeled vehicles comprises track sections which can he raised at one end by hydraulic jacks to cause vehicles resting thereon to move along the track by gravity. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a track section 4, pivoted at 5 at one end and normally resting on a fixed beam 2 at the other, can be lifted at one end by an hydraulic jack 3 to cause a railway wagon resting thereon to be moved on to a track section 10. A track section 6, pivoted at 7 and resting on a fixed beam 9, can be raised by a jack 8 to stop wagons on section 11 entering the section 4. In a modification, shown in Fig. 2, a track section 14, provided at its ends with pivots 15, 16 nesting in bearings 17, 18, can be lifted at each end by hydraulic jacks 19, 20 which are inter-locked so that only one end at a time can be lifted. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, railway wagons can be moved from a track 11 to a track 21 by the sequential raising and lowering of the various sections therebetween. The wagons are held stationary by a track section 6 held in the raised position by an extended jack A. The end of track section 4 is also raised by an extended jack B. When an operator actuates a control to retract jacks A, B the wagons move forward until the first wagon operates a track switch H to extend the jacks A, B to stop the following wagons. The wagon on track-section 4 now moves forward by gravity to operate a track switch J to retract a jack F and to extend a jack C to move the wagon to the next track section. The wagon then operates a track switch K to retract the jack C and extend a jack D to move the wagon to the next track section which is similar to that described with reference to Fig. 2. The wagon now actuates a track switch L to retract jack D and to extend a jack E to move the wagon over a switch M, which retracts jack E and extends jack F on to the track section 21 which may be part of a tippler or weigh-bridge. The jacks may be operated by remote control. Channels instead of rails may be used for moving road vehicles.
