846,160. Propelling rail vehicles. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. March 6, 1959 [Dec. 6, 1957], No. 38029/57. Class 104 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] Apparatus for receiving and controlling a moving wagon or rake of wagons comprises a vehicle 10 adapted to run on a track disposed parallel to a rail track for the wagon, means such as the projecting arm 78 being provided on the vehicle 10 for engaging the wagon or rake of wagons and other means being provided to control its speed, means such as the rope drum 30 being provided for dissipating the energy given up by the wagon or rake of wagons as the speed thereof is reduced to that of the vehicle 10. Return of the buffer arm 78 about its pivot-pin 80 is braked by means not shown. Fig. 4 shows the general manner of operation. The vehicle 10 is drawn forward by means of the cable 38 to a position against stops and its arm 78 projected. A rake of wagons advancing from the tipplers 24 strike the arm and are braked to the speed of the vehicle 10, the arm 78 being then retracted for return movement of the vehicle to carry out the operation again. As shown in Fig. 3, the cable drum 30 has a brake member 50 but in one embodiment shown, the brake for the cable is mounted in a fixed position on the ground. In another embodiment the vehicle 10 comprises two separate trucks, one incorporating the projecting arm 78 and the other the cable means.
