Abstract

774,591. Hauling railway wagons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., MITCHELL, K. J., and PELTON, B. S. May 9, 1955 [May 17, 1954], No. 14439/54. Class 104 (2). In a wagon hauling system comprising a rope or chain hauled trolley moved back and forth along an auxiliary track AT between or adjacent the main track SR, the trolley carries at an arm 4 which is turned about the axis of a spindle 3 from a position in which it is clear of wagon wheels WW to a position in which a roller 5 carried on the end of the arm 4 engages behind a wagon wheel WW, the movement of the arm 4 being effected automatically by a lever 7 secured to the spindle 3 engaging a striker in the path thereof. To the lower end of the spindle 3 is attached a " V " type lever 7 whereby the arm 4 is rotated from the operative to the inoperative position or vice versa by the lever 7 engaging strikers on the auxiliary track AT. A spring-loaded toggle mechanism 8 holds the arm 4 in the operative or inoperative position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 the arm 4 is single-ended and is provided with a wagonwheel-engaging roller 5 and a roller 10 which engages the running surface of the rail SR to prevent downward thrust on the arm 4. The arm 4 engages a stop 11 on the trolley when in the operative position. The trolley in this case runs on an auxiliary track AT arranged outside the main track SR and is, in addition, provided with two sets of three guiding-rollers 12 to steady the trolley by bearing on one rail of the auxiliary track AT to take up side thrust, this rail being of heavier section than the other rail of the auxiliary track AT. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a full loaded truck FW is moved towards a tippler TC by a trolley MD<SP>1</SP> to a set point predetermined by a limit switch at which point a second trolley MD<SP>2</SP>, made up of two sections joined by tubes or rods T, moves the fully-loaded wagon FW on to the tippler TC where the wagon is held by a wheel-flange spring-loaded retarder rail RR. After the truck has been emptied by the tippler it is pushed forwards by an oncoming fully-loaded wagon on to a sloping portion SP of the track SR from which it is moved by a further trolley MD<SP>3</SP>.
